Over the past few years, we’ve helped more California families move to Utah than we can count. Some are retiring. Some are working remotely and want more house for their money. Some are small business owners tired of the taxes. What they all have in common is that they are ready for a change, and Utah keeps showing up as the answer.
If you are considering the move, this guide will walk you through everything we have learned from doing it hundreds of times. We will cover where Californians are actually landing in Utah, what the move costs, how to time it, tax differences, and the mistakes we see people make.
If you want the full moving day playbook, start with our complete guide: Here. This post focuses specifically on the California to Utah route.
WHY CALIFORNIANS ARE MOVING TO UTAH
The reasons people give us are almost always the same. The top five we hear, in order:
- Lower cost of living. Utah’s median home price is roughly half of California’s. For the same monthly housing budget, people get a significantly larger home and often a better yard.
- Lower taxes. California’s state income tax tops out at 13.3%. Utah has a flat state income tax rate of 4.55%. For anyone earning six figures, that difference is real money every year.
- More space. St. George, Washington, and Hurricane offer red rock views, proximity to national parks, and space that does not exist in most California metros.
- Remote work freedom. If your job is remote, you can earn California wages while paying Utah costs. We see a lot of tech workers making this exact move.
- Quality of life. 300+ sunny days a year in southern Utah, safe neighborhoods, and an outdoor lifestyle are real draws. Families with kids mention this the most.
WHERE CALIFORNIANS ARE LANDING IN UTAH
Not every Utah city is equally popular with California transplants. Based on what we see on the trucks, here is where most people are settling:
St. George and Washington County: This is by far the most popular destination. The climate is mild, the cost of living is low, and there is no snow. Retirees and remote workers love it. Communities like Desert Color, The Ledges, Entrada, and SunRiver draw a lot of California buyers. Learn more on our St. George moving page
Hurricane and the Zion gateway: For people who want to be closer to nature and do not mind a slightly more rural feel, Hurricane has become a hot spot. Sand Hollow State Park and easy Zion access make it very appealing.
Washington City: Right next to St. George with a slightly different vibe. More family-oriented, excellent schools. Our Washington movers handle many moves into this area every month.
Utah County (Provo, Lehi, Saratoga Springs): For people in tech or with ties to BYU, Utah County is popular. The Silicon Slopes area has been a huge draw for former Bay Area tech workers.
THE TAX DIFFERENCE IS BIGGER THAN YOU THINK
This is worth a section on its own because people underestimate it.
California state income tax tops out at 13.3% for high earners. Utah has a flat 4.55% state income tax. Sales tax is also lower in Utah (typically 7-8%) than in many California counties (often 9-10%+).
Here is a rough example. A household earning $200,000 per year pays roughly $17,000 in California state income tax. The same household in Utah pays roughly $9,100. That is almost $8,000 per year back in the family budget. Over ten years, that is nearly $80,000.
We are not tax advisors, so talk to a CPA before making the move. But this is one of the biggest reasons people are crossing state lines.
THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO MOVE FROM CALIFORNIA TO UTAH
Timing matters more than most people realize. Here is what we tell everyone:
**Best months:** October through April. Weather is mild, demand is lower, and pricing is better. Southern Utah highs are usually in the 60s and 70s during these months — perfect moving weather.
**Avoid if possible:** June through August. Southern Utah temperatures regularly hit 105°F+. Moving trucks with no shade in the middle of the desert is miserable for crews and risky for heat-sensitive items like electronics, candles, and vinyl records. If you must move in summer, plan for 6 AM start times and consider climate-controlled storage for anything heat-sensitive.
**Worst timing:** Last weekend of the month during summer. This is peak demand nationwide. Prices are 25-40% higher and crews are stretched thin. If your California landlord flexibility allows, move mid-month on a Tuesday or Wednesday.
THE ROUTE: WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THE DRIVE
Most California to Utah moves take I-15 North or I-15 East through Las Vegas. If you are doing the drive yourself alongside the moving truck:
– LA to St. George: About 6 hours in good traffic. Plan for 7-8 hours with stops.
– Bay Area to St. George: 10-11 hours minimum. Most people split this into two days.
– San Diego to St. George: About 6.5 hours.
One tip: the route passes right through Littlefield, Arizona, about 30 minutes from St. George. If you need storage during a gap between your California sale and Utah closing, our Littlefield, AZ storage facility is perfectly positioned on the route. A lot of our California clients use it for 1-3 months during the transition and save significant money versus Las Vegas storage pricing.
COMMON MISTAKES WE SEE FROM CALIFORNIA TRANSPLANTS
After helping hundreds of California families make this move, here are the mistakes that show up most often:
1. Underestimating the heat. If you are moving in May through September, the desert heat is a real factor. Electronics left in a truck at 110°F do not do well. Wax and candles melt. Wine spoils. Have a plan for heat-sensitive items.
2. Not timing the two states’ closings together. People often close in California before their Utah home is ready. That gap is where storage comes in. Plan for it in advance rather than scrambling at the last minute.
3. Bringing too much furniture. California homes are often smaller than the Utah homes people upgrade to, but the layouts are different. Open-concept Utah homes often do not fit the furniture people had in California. We see a lot of regret about moving pieces that did not fit the new space. Measure your new home before deciding what to bring.
4. Not researching HOA rules. Many St. George and Washington County communities have strict HOA rules including specific move-in windows (usually weekdays, 8 AM to 5 PM). Confirm this before your move date.
5. Waiting too long to book. California to Utah moves in spring and summer get booked out 4-6 weeks in advance. The best moving companies fill up first. If you know your date, book early.
WHAT TO DO FIRST (STARTING 60 DAYS OUT)
Here is the exact timeline we recommend for a California to Utah move:
60 days out:

– Begin decluttering
– Notify your landlord or list your home
45 days out:

– Start collecting moving boxes
– Schedule utility disconnection in California and setup in Utah
30 days out:
– Start packing non-essential items
– File change of address with USPS
– Update your driver’s license plan (Utah gives you 60 days after moving)
14 days out:
– Finish most packing
– Confirm arrival times with movers
– Disconnect cable, internet, and secondary services.
2 days out:
